Vodo Arts Society and blaxTARLINES hosted a workshop and art talk with Ghanaian visual artist Ama Adoley Newman at the ICT Innovation Hub in Nakawa, Kampala.
The interactive workshop focused on the concept of fluorescence, where participants observed how common household liquids react and glow under light when held in clear plastic containers. The experiment featured items such as tonic water, energy drinks, detergents, turmeric, soft drinks, and Uganda Waragi. By observing these glowing chemical reactions, attendees examined how physical materials can help us visualize abstract ideas like time and physical sensation.
During the art talk, Newman discussed how this experiment fits into her broader artistic practice, which focuses on still life, experimentation, and combining different fields of study. Newman holds a BFA and MFA from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and has earned international honors, including the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung award in 2023 and a residency in Vienna.
The public workshop and talk served as the climax of Newman’s three-week visit to Kampala. Throughout her stay, she spent time visiting various art spaces and connecting directly with local artists across Uganda. Newman’s visit to Uganda took place as part of an ongoing exchange programme between Vodo Arts Society and blaxTARLINES, connecting artists and creative practices between Uganda and Ghana.
