ZIKUSANZE OPENS: An Encounter with Present-Day African Realities
Zikusanze: If You Do, Zikusanze: If You Don’t, the compelling exhibition that recently opened, is a testament to the deep collaboration between two distinct artistic voices: Wamala Kyeyune Joseph and Kikomeko Gerald Puto. This significant show, presented by Vodo and curated by Carol Kagezi, marks a pivotal moment in Kampala’s art scene, bringing together years of individual artistic development that now intertwine in a cohesive and thought-provoking dialogue.
The opening drew a diverse gathering, uniting fellow artists and enthusiastic art lovers from across the Kampala art community, alongside curious mall-goers. Their presence brought a vibrant energy, adding life to what might otherwise be a quiet mall, as everyone was eager to witness this unique presentation. The display feels minimalistic, yet each piece carries an undeniable presence. The atmosphere within the exhibition space feels both raw and contemporary, while remaining authentically rooted in the nuanced experiences of Africa. It avoids exoticism, instead offering a genuine and profound engagement with the continent’s multifaceted identity.
Wamala’s contributions include textured paintings and assemblages that explore self-artistry and reflect the resilience found in everyday life. In contrast, Kikomeko’s work meticulously repurposes discarded materials such as metal, plastic, and wood. Through these reclaimed elements, Kikomeko challenges perceptions of value and waste, shedding light on the lasting effects of colonialism and capitalism.
The exhibition masterfully showcases how their individual works—each strong as a standalone statement—converge to form collaborative pieces that expand upon their shared exploration of memory, meaning, and materiality in contemporary Africa. The curatorial vision emphasizes symbolism and storytelling, ensuring that each artwork serves not merely as a visual display but as a catalyst for conversation about unspoken burdens, grey areas, and the layered realities of a postcolonial existence. This Zikusanze exhibition is more than an exhibition; it’s an invitation for introspection and a critical rethinking of our relationship with the world, encouraging visitors to consider what they “carry away” from the experience.
