Vodo Arts Society Brings Color to Kampala’s Child Cancer Patients Through Creative Healing

The Vodo Arts Society and Lab (Vodo) recently transformed the Mulago hospital Uganda Child Cancer Foundation’s (UCCF) recreation space into a vibrant studio, where young patients battling cancer poured their dreams and imaginations onto canvases. The event, part of Vodo’s philanthropic arts initiative, paired volunteers with children aged 3 to 16, alongside their nurses and caretakers, for a day of therapeutic creativity. Using brushes, sponges, and their hands, the children painted whimsical dreamscapes—from floating castles and rainbow-winged butterflies to planets filled with smiling creatures—each artwork reflecting their resilience and boundless inner worlds.
Nurses and caretakers joined the sessions, assisting children in blending colors and sharing stories behind their creations. A collaborative mural, “World of Wonders,” emerged as a patchwork of the children’s visions, symbolizing hope amid adversity. “Their art isn’t just pretty pictures—it’s a window into their courage,” said MF Semuju, a Vodo volunteer. “One boy painted himself as a lion guiding his family through a storm. It was profoundly moving.”
The initiative left a lasting mark beyond the artroom. Vodo donated paints, canvases, and sketchbooks to sustain UCCF’s creative programs, with plans to host quarterly workshops. “Art lets these children express what words cannot,” shared a UCCF caretaker. “Today, they weren’t patients; they were artists.”
Vodo aims to replicate the program in other pediatric care centers, proving that creativity can light even the darkest paths.
