Silent Invasions: The Art of Material Hacking
November 10, 2023 – January 13, 2024
Presented by UNDER GROUND Contemporary Art, Vodo Art Society & Lab, Weaver Bird Residency, and Amasaka Gallery
In collaboration with blaxTARLINES Kumasi (Ghana)
Silent Invasions brought together over thirty artists from across Africa and the diaspora to explore “hacking” as a creative, political, and material strategy. Artworks took shape across Masaka’s Amasaka Gallery and spilled out into abandoned buildings and city streets—activating the architecture and rewriting expectations of where and how art can live.
Why Masaka? The city’s art culture is raw, rooted in tradition, and increasingly experimental. Its rhythm and resistance—neither urban sprawl nor rural retreat—made it an ideal host for an exhibition seeking to question conventions and redirect narratives.
From performance to video, painting to digital installation, the exhibition featured work that expanded the idea of material hacking—whether through political disruption, spatial reappropriation, or the transformation of everyday materials.
