Michael Ddungu

ichael Ddungu is a self-taught visual artist based in Kampala, Uganda, whose practice is primarily centered around the human figure and the stories it carries. He began with ballpoint pen sketches on paper before transitioning to acrylic markers on canvas. Over time, he incorporated color and stitching, developing a distinctive cross-hatching technique that gives his work a textured, layered quality. His style is defined by an intense focus on detail—a deliberate, patient process that mirrors the time and thought embedded in each stroke. The repetition of his lines forms a visual language of presence, time, and introspection, while still allowing space for an unfinished, evolving aesthetic.
Though still early in his career, Michael is steadily making his way into the art world. He held his first independent studio visit in May 2025, offering viewers an intimate encounter with his creative process through a range of works on various subjects. He also participated in a group exhibition at Ardhi Gallery in Nairobi in November 2023.
