Joshua Yiga

Yiga Joshua is a versatile Ugandan artist whose dynamic practice spans painting, sculpture, and large-scale murals, all unified by his experimental use of texture. A graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Industrial Design (specializing in painting and sculpture) from Kyambogo University (2021), Yiga has developed a distinctive style that honors tradition while pushing contemporary boundaries. He is particularly renowned for his textured reinterpretations of Uganda’s traditional banana fiber dolls, rendered in vivid, layered brushstrokes that bridge cultural heritage with modern artistry.

A strong believer in the power of artistic collaboration, Yiga frequently works with fellow creators to explore new creative possibilities. His acclaimed 2023 solo exhibition Zadde showcased this communal spirit while celebrating themes of heritage and identity through mixed-media works. Yiga’s paintings are characterized by their tactile, granular surfaces—often incorporating unconventional materials like sand, fabric, or natural fibers alongside traditional paints. Whether through public murals that transform urban spaces, his innovative banana fiber doll series, or collaborative projects, Yiga’s work demonstrates a profound commitment to both artistic innovation and Uganda’s rich cultural legacy.
